Neighborhood Info

The Vine City Area map includes the neighborhoods of Bankhead, Hunter Hills, the Atlanta University Center, Vine City, and English Avenue. In the not too distant past, the English Avenue, Vine City and Bankhead districts suffered from urban blight and high crime rates. Especially bad was a notorious area called “the bluff” (acronym for Better Leave yoU F___ing Fool) centered around the corner of James P. Brawley Drive & Cameron M. Alexander Blvd. In recent years, redevelopment efforts have begun bringing this area back from the brink. An example of this turn-around is the beautiful new Rodney Cook Sr. Park. The Atlanta University Center is home to the largest group of historically Black colleges and universities in the United States.  Here you will find Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and the Morehouse School of Medicine.

Street Art in the Neighborhood

In this part of town, Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway hosts a concentration of street art. On this street, go see the 44 Murals project in a revitalized industrial complex. Despite the name you will see well over 44 murals each painted by a different artist. Joseph E. Boone Blvd. is another street art hot-spot. The Vine City Mural Project contains over thirty individual murals by different artists. Joseph McKinney has a beautiful large scale mural right across the street from the Vine City Mural Project. Also check out the area on and around the corner of Joseph E. Lowery Blvd and MLK Jr. Drive.  If you are fortunate enough to have access to the Morehouse campus, be sure to see the mural by Fabian Williams. And If you are visiting the Atlanta University Center and have a little extra time, check out the nearby West End Murals.
