Jermaine Clark

Jermaine Clark (who goes by Xmaine) is a fine artist and muralist who’s styles range from abstraction to realism to word art. Clark’s murals can be seen all over Atlanta and he was a featured artist for the Forward Warrior mural festival. Jermaine’s BLM murals in the Summerhill neighborhood were part of the creative outpouring of protest following the murder of George Floyd in 2020. The following paragraphs are quotes (with the artist’s permission) from Clark’s website in January 2023:

Jermaine Clark is a contemporary artist whose practice expresses unity by an intersection of gestural marks and text. By channeling the energy of the moment, his aim is to reimagine the execution of abstract expressionist painting from a unique perspective. Exploring tools, textures, and color, Clark strives to produce an artistic body of work that evokes emotion, inspires hope for the future and brings conceptual meaning to the art of writing.

Born and raised in St. Louis MO, his inner city upbringing is what motivated him to paint as a creative outlet. Faced with adversities common to the African American experience, art gave Jermaine a safe space to express what was going on in the world around him. While growing up, he gravitated towards hip hop culture, especially rap music where a freedom of expression and passion is what motivated him to pursue a career in visual arts.

The inspiration behind his work can be linked to a connection with Lyrics, quotes and phrases that reflect on the constant transitions of life while on the pursuit of happiness. This combined with an intentional effort of making words a visual composition, creates a unique expression that blur the lines of reading text and seeing image. Clark’s passion to make art has gone beyond the studio and into the public art space.

Jermaine received formal training at Alabama A&M University where he earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in 2010. He currently resides in Atlanta, GA where he works as a studio artist and muralist. While being represented by Cateye Creative agency and Freemarket Gallery, his past clientele include Atlanta Public Schools, the historic Martin Luther King Center, and American Family Insurance.
